Are you considering becoming a runner? Have you decided to start running to improve your fitness? Before putting on your running shoes, check out these very useful running tips for beginners from fitness and running expert William Wardlaw (ig: @William.Wardlaw)
(William came in 2nd out of 600 at the Seal Beach Turkey Trot Race last November)
Tips for starting:
Just start. Don’t think about it for too long. There will be days when you are tired or want to make excuses, but just start! Break it down into small steps; put on your shoes, your Amazfit smartwatch and get out the door!
Walk before you run. If you’re new to exercise, start with walking. I would rather have my clients outside walking for an hour than only running for 10 minutes. Once you feel comfortable walking, add small intervals of jogging and build from there.
Hydrate before you go. If you are a beginner or running for less than an hour, there is no need to bring water with you. Hydrate before you start running., I recommend adding a pinch of Himalayan salt and a squeeze of lemon to your water instead of just drinking pure water or isotonic drinks.
Wear comfortable loose-fitting clothes. I prefer loose clothing over tight clothing when it comes to running; I don’t want to feel restricted.
It’s a mind game. If I have not run in a week or two, during that first run back I am mentally weak/easily distracted, and I normally don’t perform as well. You are training your mind as much as your body. Start small and build up mental endurance as well as physical endurance. Listening to podcasts or music is a great distraction.
If you get comfortable, challenge yourself by tracking your workouts on your Amazfit smartwatch; increase the distance or improve your time - it’s you vs you.
